To my ears the other plugin comps are generally closer however they dont have the same slight issue I tend to hear with plugin comps - lack of low end energy and punch - compared to the hardware. For me the added low end in FG Grey a bit much and the mids aren't so bright. You can hear that appears the main difference to the others - as well as slightly different release character. I could be wrong but I think this is the reason why FG Grey was modified with the 'articulated transients' mod of the st ives transformer. What is interesting is the slightly increased low end transient punch of the HW. Slate did not reveal which was the hardware but I have taken the liberty of renaming the files which were fairly obviously VBC and the HW. I decided to see how the SSL plugins compared using audio from the Slate test here on some fairly heavily compressed drums.
